David and Victoria Beckham have renewed their wedding vows.
The couple first married in a lavish ceremony in Ireland in 1999, complete with thrones, crowns and a big bucks magazine deal, yet the football legend revealed the renewal was a much classier affair.
Speaking during a much-anticipated appearance on the special 75th anniversary edition of Radio 4’s Desert Island Discs, the 41-year-old revealed the vows were said in front of just six people at their house.
David and Victoria, who met at a Manchester United game in 1997, married at Luttrellstown Castle in Ireland, and went on to have four children together – Brooklyn, 17, Romeo, 14, Cruz, eleven and five-year-old Harper.
After announcing their engagement in 1998, the couple have long attracted a media circus after creating brand ‘Posh And Becks’ – meaning the private renewal may come as a shock to many.
David revealed: ‘We did throw a lot at (our first wedding). We have renewed our vows since then and it was a lot more private, there was about six people there in our house.
Of their eye-catching outfits, in which the duo flitted between head-to-toe white and later a plum getup, the handsome star appears slightly red-faced: ‘That was pretty bold. Victoria’s was pretty nice. Mine, I’m like what was I thinking? I even had a top hat in purple. What was I thinking?
Mulling over their relationship history, David also revealed the rather bizarre dates they once shared: ‘I drove down, I picked her up … we used to sit in a Harvester car park and we just used to kiss, of course, and spend time together.’
Further on in the insightful interview, he stated that the secret to his and Victoria’s marriage is being able to ‘work through’ the ‘tough times’.
He admits that he and Victoria know each other inside out – and it is this mutual love and understanding of each other and their children that has kept them together for so long.
Having remained mostly tight-lipped about their relationship over the years, the sportsman is quick to gush about his marriage to the designer as he chatted to host Kirsty Young.
David explained that their union works due to their strong moral backgrounds, as well as their ability to discuss any ‘mistakes’ that occur during their high-profile romance.
He explained: ‘We’ve got strong parents. We were brought up with the right values.’
‘Of course you make mistakes over the years, and we all know marriage is difficult at times but it’s about working through it.’
Affirming their close bond, the former LA Galaxy player continued: ‘Whenever we’ve come up against tough times we know each other better than anyone knows us, so we talk.’
Their children are often in the spotlight alongside their parents – with Brooklyn enjoying a romance with actress Chloe Moretz last year, and Cruz releasing a Christmas charity single in December.
However the businessman went on to address claims made in the past about his and Victoria’s marriage, as a force behind the family’s ‘brand’.
Refuting such accusations, David sweetly added to Kirsty: ‘We stay together because we love each other, and because we have four wonderful children.’
