A mother who tried for a baby for nine years discovered she was pregnant the day she was due to start IVF treatment.
Amber Worth, 26, was told she would never have a natural birth after she suffered a miscarriage and was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries at the age of 19.
After giving up trying to have a baby naturally, she and her husband Simon, 36, a retail assistant, decided to turn to IVF.
But on the very same day of her first appointment, she was stunned to find herself clutching a positive pregnancy test.
Baby Luca was born in November last year.
Doctors have since attributed Mrs Worth’s conception success to the fact she had lost three stone to fit into her wedding dress.
Between January and March 2014 she went from 14st 7lb to 11st 7lb
She said: ‘He really is my miracle baby and being his mother is the most amazing feeling.
‘I just couldn’t believe it when I found out I was pregnant. I kept waiting for something to go wrong but here we are today.
‘I was always the big one among friends and I never thought I’d have a baby at all, so to have Luca really is special.
‘When he was born I just heard this baby crying and then someone told me he was mine and I couldn’t contain myself. I’ve never felt so happy.
‘After all that time of desperately wanting a child and thinking it would never happen, here he was.’
Mrs Worth started putting on weight when she was 16 after leaving school and getting a job in a bakery in Hull, where she lives.
After suffering a miscarriage at 19, she was diagnosed with polycystic ovaries – a condition where cysts develop in the ovaries meaning they fail to release eggs regularly.
Over the years they kept trying for a baby – with no success.
‘All I could think about was getting into my wedding dress – even when I was getting geared up to start the treatment, the wedding was everything.
‘I just couldn’t believe it.
‘I kept thinking something was going to go wrong and it didn’t seem real until I saw my first scan and my baby on the screen.
‘It only then that I thought “this is actually going to happen”. Then, when I had Luca, I just couldn’t stop crying.
‘After all this time, he is here and doctors have told me losing the weight definitely increased my chances of having a child.’
Mrs Worth lost the weight by following Slimming World’s food optimising plan – a diet that encourages lots of fruit and vegetables and restricts unhealthier foods to occasional treats.
She said: ‘The doctors told me there was a very small chance of me ever getting pregnant naturally.
‘It seemed everyone had children except me and I had wanted a baby for such a long time.
‘I was the only one out of the group of my friends who didn’t have a child and I was always the “big one” when we went on a night out.
‘I knew I had to do something about my weight but I didn’t realise what a huge impact it would have on my life.’
