A court has ruled a pregnant woman who suffers from a psychotic disorder can be given a Caesarean section without her consent.
The woman from Sunderland, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is due to undergo the operation later.
She is said to be suffering from a liver condition which is posing a risk to her and her unborn child.
The woman’s father told the court that a natural birth would be too stressful for his daughter.
The Court of Protection made the ruling after an application from City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust.
The court, which deals with cases regarding vulnerable and ill people, ruled that sedation and restraint could be used as part of the procedure.
