For the past 40 years I have cooked Keftedes  the way I was taught by my own mother. They can be eaten all year round and only require a few simple ingredients. I have always found them to be a really rewarding dish and always requested by my children and grandchildren even if I am thousands of miles away.

For this simple dish you will need:

500gr of  mince

1 medium onion

2 eggs

6 or 7 strands of fresh Parsley

4 large potatoes

salt and pepper to season

1 tsp cinnamon

cooking oil to Fry the Keftedes.


Place the mince in a mixing bowl.

Grate finely the onion and the potatoes.

Place the eggs into the mixture.

Finely cut the parsley and add to mixture.

Add the salt,pepper and cinnamon.

Mix the ingredients well and form into little meatballs .

Heat the oil in a pan and add the keftedes turning occasionally until cooked.

Serve with a nice greek salad or with Greek Yogurt  or Pilafi as shown in the photo. For this you will need .

For Pilafi :

2 cups of rice

4 cups of water

4 or 5 fresh tomatoes or if your feeling lazy 1 tin of tomatoes.

1 onion

salt and pepper.

a little olive oil to fry the onion.

Place a little oil in a  medium size saucepan.

Cut the onion into small cubes and place in the pan.

When the onion starts to brown add the tin of tomatoes or the fresh grated tomatoes and mix well.

Add the 2 cups of rice and four cups of water to the pan and stir.

Simmer on a low heat for about half an hour till rice is cooked.
