It’s official, the average British parent will be asked nearly ten thousand questions every year (27 a day) by their kids,1 according to new research by baby and toddler brand Munchkin – and they don’t always know how to answer them.
The nationwide study of 1,000 parents of primary school children, found that one in four parents (21%) said their own lack of knowledge about the natural world means they are often at a total loss when their kids ask about it.1
Seventeen per cent of parents admitted they didn’t know how many continents there are, thirteen per cent mistakenly believe the African elephant is extinct, and one in five didn’t know an Orca was a killer whale.1
Even when it comes to everyday topics twenty-one per cent of Mums and Dads can’t answer their kids when they ask how plastic is made and forty-six per cent get confused over what can and can’t be recycled.1
The research also revealed that thirty-one per cent of parents say their children have influenced the way they think about environmental issues, with forty-three per cent say that since having children they are now more concerned about the environmental legacy they leave behind.1
One in four (40 per cent) British parents said they were striving to teach their family to be sustainable in their everyday lives.1 When asked which little things, they do to teach their children to look after the environment, 72 per cent teach their little ones to turn off lights when they aren’t being used, sixty-five per cent focus on recycling and sixty per cent are teaching their children to reduce their energy and water usage. 1
