Self Care Tips For New Mums
Say “yes” and accept offers of help.
When it comes to accepting help, we can be our own worst enemy. If someone is offering to share the load, we are often tempted to tell them that we’re fine and can manage.
Try saying “yes” more often. If someone offers to look after your baby for an hour, or cook a meal, or do some shopping or cleaning, be sure to take them up on it. Use this time to take a much-needed break, go for a gentle walk, or whatever you would like. Try to relax and enjoy it.
Rest
During the first few weeks of motherhood, you are most likely to be in a full cycle of feeding, changing and monitoring your baby’s sleep pattern. This is the time to bond with your baby and rest, it is so important for your post-partum body to rest and recover. Try your best to sleep or rest when your baby is sleeping.
Pelvic floor exercises are a must
Pelvic floor exercises are a must and are well worth doing. It will help you to regain that important bladder control, but it will also help your internal muscles to regain some of their strength and tone. You can do them anywhere and the secret is, nobody will even know.
Reach out
There’s an old saying that “It takes a village to raise a child”. Always remember that you are not alone on this journey. Reach out to family, friends and social media, there are many online communities of mums to share experiences, swap questions and even create new friendships.
Don’t forget to make time for yourself
It is important that you do not forget who you are. You have become a mum but be sure to enjoy the things you loved before your baby arrived. Meet up with friends and go for a walk or coffee, go to the gym, enjoy your hair, or nail appointments. Each week make a little “me-time”. You owe it to yourself on this wonderful journey of becoming a mum. When you return home, you will be refreshed and even happier than usual to cuddle and spend time with your little one.
